The Hermitage of Santa Caterina

The Hermitage of Santa Caterina Del Sasso and its captivating story lies between Ispra and Laveno. Founded by merchant Alberto Besozzi, after surviving a storm while crossing the lake. He then became a hermit devoted to Saint Catherine of Egypt and ordered a chapel and two other churches to be built in her name. Like Besozzi, The Hermitage survived a disaster when five enormous boulders crashed down from the mountain and got stuck in the chapel’s vault without causing any serious damage. While on the subject of rocks, this is a great place for rock climbing: it is considered a very technical climb with a breath-taking view of the lake!
